Considered to be the most fundamental course at the Columbia Journalism School, reporting allows for M.S. students to develop professional skills in researching, sourcing, interviewing, writing, and editing. This is done by producing weekly news stories relating to a particular beat. Because of his interest and experience with the industry, Jason reported on fashion. Under the instruction of Duy Linh Tu and Keren Blankfeld, he produced stories on New York Fashion Week, The Metropolitan Museum of Art (In America: A Lexicon of Fashion), the Brooklyn Museum (Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams), Condé Nast, and more.
Following his reporting course, Jason continued studying fundamental journalistic tools by learning opinion writing with political commentator and author, Sally Kohn. From broadcast-ready soundbites to narrative-driven columns, he produced op-eds for a variety of formats. The course culminated in his production of an article on the passing of fashion designer, Virgil Abloh — which earned him honors in the class. Jason then focused his writing on arts criticism under the guidance of music critic for The Nation, David Hajdu. He wrote a range of reviews on film, music, theatre, and fine art. A selection of Jason's writing from his time at the Columbia Journalism School can be found below.
