Voices of Change: Black Women in Journalism is a 2021 YouTube special created in celebration of Black History Month. As the senior digital producer of Annenberg Media, Jason was tasked with ideating, producing, and launching an original project to represent the student-led newsroom.
Inspired by his peers and alumni of Annenberg Media, Jason wanted to give those he deeply admired a platform to speak their truth. Therefore, he brought together both seasoned and up-and-coming Black female journalists who are navigating the news media industry. Three current students and three alumni share their diverse perspectives in this unprecedented conversation.
Through powerful, thought-provoking, and sometimes painful personal testimonies, these six women - Thando Dlomo, Judith Nwandu, Heran Mamo, Sydney Rockett, Toni Hall, and Leanna Faulk - paint a raw and honest portrait of the unique challenges faced by Black women in the media landscape.
By sharing their stories, we hope that the media industry might become at least a little more aware of the systemic racism that is at its core, and work towards actively dismantling this racism.
